Overview

The “Sutras Excavated from a Sutra Mound at Kinpuzan-ji” (Kinpuzan Kōzuka) is a collection of Buddhist scriptures recovered from a kōzuka (sutra mound)—a burial site for religious texts—in the temple complex of Kinpuzan-ji in Yoshino, Nara. These are magnificent decorated sutras, featuring scripture written in gold ink on deep indigo paper. The artifact was designated as a National Treasure in 2024. It is an extremely important historical record symbolizing the Heian Period, when mountain asceticism (Shugendō) and Pure Land Buddhism practiced by the aristocracy were deeply intertwined.

Historical Background

During the mid-Heian Period, as the concept of mappō (the last stage of the world according to Buddhism, in which Buddhism declines) spread, various sites began creating kōzuka. These mounds involved burying sutras within metal tubes deep underground or in sacred mountain locations, intended to preserve teachings for future generations. Kinpuzan Mountain in Yoshino was believed to be the Pure Land of Maitreya (Miroku-bosatsu). Consequently, powerful aristocrats, including Fujiwara no Michinaga, personally ascended the mountain and made votive offerings of scriptures. This item originates from a kōzuka buried at Kinpuzan Mountain under these circumstances. It vividly illustrates both the profound depth of faith within the aristocratic society of the time and the immense religious significance that Yoshino held.
